Keyless car theft is a major issue due to the way the “keyless” design works. The keyless remote is a radio system that’s RF transmissions are received by the systems received, located in the car, extracts it and sends the data to the CPU which opens the car. This has become easy for thieves to mimic and convince the car that a transmission coming from their radio is the key and automatically open it. Here are a few ways you can aid the prevention of your keyless car being stolen:
- Disabling the keyless entry feature and using the key to manually unlock the car – this is a controversial tip because keyless entry is obviously a key feature of newer cars because it is so practical, however, it puts the car in a much higher risk level.
- Faraday cage box storage = when in your home, the faraday key box is a good way of preventing the theft of your car, this is because the box blocks the RF signals so hat thieves can’t mimic them to break into the car. The box should be stored in your bedroom, this is so that if somebody where to break into your home, you can try and prevent them from steeling the keys. Further, cars come with 2 keys, so it is important that you have another separate box for the spare keys. Hiding this second box somewhere safe that thieves are unlikely to find is important, because if they were to steel your first set of keys from your bedroom, the second set can help you when finding the stolen vehicle.
- Faraday pouch = the pouch is an alternative to the box; however, it also means that you can take it with you when you go out of the house as it is compact and will fit in your pocket.
- Physical prevention when the car is parked = physical prevention is easier with those with drives. The best methods being a gate or bollard. Electric gates are even better than the average gate as it will be more inconvenient for the thieves. However, if you park your car on the road of can’t have a gate/bollard installed, other prevention methods are steering wheel locks, wheel clamps and wheel locks. However, wheel locks aren’t recommended unless you are able to invest in a high-quality lock. This is because many of them are fitted with cheap and easily broken locks which means that thieves will remove it easily.
- Cameras = having cameras in or around your property will help you to identify thieves which may help you to recover a stolen vehicle quicker.
- Tracking system installation = Tracking systems allow you to locate the car, giving you a higher chance of recovering the vehicle, however, it is important to choose a tracking company that is very discreet so that thieves are unable to easily see the tracker and remove it. One of our insurers recorded that their has been a 50% reduction of thefts when people install sophisticated tracking systems.
